More Gary Kubiak’s reign as head coachof the Denver Broncos is officially over after two seasons. The Broncos did their best to protect Kubiak from himself when he was hospitalised in October following a game against the Atlanta Falcons, ensuring he got his rest by having him sit out a game at the San Diego Chargers four days later. Heading into Sunday’s victorious season finale against the Oakland Raiders, Kubiak decided it was time to take ownership of his health issues. After informing his players, he formally announced his resignation on Monday by saying that he simply cannot continue in the job. “I love to work and I love football, but ultimately the demands of the job are no longer a good fit for me,” Kubiak said in a statement. “I gave everything I had to this team the last two seasons, but this year, in particular, has been tough on me. “As hard as it is to leave this position, I know that it is the best thing for myself, my family and the Denver Broncos.” Kubiak was diagnosed with a “complex migraine” after the October hospitalisation, his second significant health scare in three years. In November 2013, the then-Houston Texans coach collapsed while walking off the field at half-time of a game against the Indianapolis Colts. The Texans said he suffered a transient ischemic attack – a mini-stroke – and Kubiak sat out one game before returning. He described himself as a workaholic at the time and those habits are no longer worth the risk for the 55-year-old. Whatever comes next, his place in Broncos history is secure. After serving as John Elway’s back-up QB during his time as a player, he was a part of three Super Bowl titles with the team as an assistant before leading Denver to victory in Super Bowl 50 last season. “I’m not sure what my future holds, but I know that I’ll always consider myself a Bronco,” Kubiak said. General manager Elway added: “When Gary informed me of his decision to step down as head coach, I was obviously saddened and disappointed. But, I understand and respect Gary for doing whats right for him as well as his family.” Reblog
